A spray tan can be flawless or patchy, long-lasting or gone in three days — and the difference almost always comes down to what you did before the appointment, not during it. The Opulence Diamond Series booth applies solution perfectly every time. Your skin's condition when you walk in determines what that solution has to work with.
Here's the complete 48-hour prep protocol we give every new client at Naturally Bronzed.
The 48-Hour Checklist
-
01
Exfoliate — 24 to 48 hours before This is the most important step. Dead skin cells sitting on the surface of your skin develop the solution unevenly and cause it to fade patchily. Use a scrub or exfoliating mitt on your entire body — knees, elbows, ankles, and the backs of your arms especially. These are the areas with the most cell buildup and the most common source of patchiness. Exfoliate 24–48 hours before, not the morning of — freshly exfoliated skin can be slightly irritated and more reactive to solution.
-
02
Shave or wax — at least 24 hours before Shaving opens the hair follicles. If you spray tan immediately after shaving, the solution settles into the open follicles and creates tiny dark dots — a polka-dot effect most visible on the legs and arms. Shave or wax at least 24 hours before your appointment, ideally 48 hours before if your skin is sensitive. Never shave the day of.
-
03
Shower — the morning of, not right before Shower as normal in the morning. Do not shower immediately before your appointment — your pores will still be open and your skin will still be slightly damp, both of which affect solution development. If you're coming in after work or midday, a morning shower is ideal timing.
-
04
Skip moisturizer on the day of Moisturizers create a barrier on the skin that blocks DHA from bonding properly. If you moisturize the morning of your appointment, you'll get uneven development. Save your moisturizer for after — our Skin Glow Tan Extender is specifically formulated to moisturize without disrupting your tan.
-
05
Come in clean — no deodorant, perfume, or makeup Any product on your skin will interfere with DHA development. Deodorant in particular causes serious issues in the underarm area — it creates a barrier that blocks the solution and often causes streaking. Come in with no deodorant, no perfume, no body lotion, no makeup on areas being tanned.
-
06
Wear the right clothing Loose, dark clothing — both to your appointment and after. Tight clothing rubs developing solution off and creates lines. Dark clothing hides any bronzer transfer before you rinse. Flip flops or open-toed shoes are strongly recommended so the tops of your feet aren't covered after your session.
What to Avoid vs What's Fine
- Moisturizer or body lotion
- Deodorant or antiperspirant
- Perfume or body spray
- Makeup on areas being tanned
- Shaving (do this 24–48 hrs before)
- Swimming (chlorine strips DHA)
- Heavy sweating before your appointment
- Morning shower (not right before)
- Light moisturizer on face (won't be tanned)
- Hair styling (keep away from skin)
- Eating and drinking as normal
- Light exercise earlier in the day
- Nail polish — just avoid getting solution on nails
- Jewelry you remove at the studio
Classic vs Rapid: Which Formula to Choose
We offer two formulas at Naturally Bronzed, and your prep is the same for both — but the development timing is different:
- Classic 8HR — our most popular everyday formula. Develops fully in 8 hours. Rinse, reveal, glow. Results last up to 7 days with proper aftercare. Choose this if you're not in a rush before an event.
- Rapid 4HR — you control the depth of color. Rinse at 2 hours for a light natural bronze, 3 hours for medium, or the full 4 hours for the deepest result. Perfect if you're tanning the night before a wedding, vacation departure, or event where you want to see results before you go.
Both formulas come with and without bronzer. Bronzer gives you immediate visible color while the DHA develops — useful for seeing coverage during application and walking out already glowing. No-bronzer formulas are fully invisible until they develop, which works better if you're going somewhere immediately after your appointment and don't want transfer on anything.
The booth does everything else. Your job is to show up with the right canvas. Prep is half the tan.
After Your Tan — What Not to Do
Your prep is complete, your tan is applied — now don't undo it. The most important post-tan rules:
- Don't shower until the development time is up (8 hours for Classic, 2–4 hours for Rapid depending on your desired depth)
- Avoid sweating — heavy workouts, hot yoga, or anything that makes you sweat significantly during development time will streak the tan
- No baths, pools, or long showers during development — water stops the DHA process
- When you rinse, use cool water only — no soap, no scrubbing. Just rinse until the water runs clear
- Moisturize daily starting the day after — a spray-tan-compatible moisturizer can help support more even fading and longer-lasting color
